This is a fast-paced, interesting workshop which incorporates video vignettes and case histories throughout the day in a variety of settings where counselors may encounter situations involving self-injurious/self-mutilating behaviors. Assessment tips and treatment techniques will be discussed from a variety of perspectives.

Objectives: At the conclusion of this training, participants will be able to:

1. Assess clients with regard to the possibility they are engaging in SIB (self-injurious behavior)

2. Differentiate between suicidal and parasuicidal behaviors

3. Understand various reasons for self-injurious behaviors, including the Addiction Model

4. Identify various resources available to assist with dealing with this population

5. Employ various interventions aimed at reducing harmful behaviors

Trainer: Barbara Melton, M.Ed., LPC, LPCS, LAC, NCC/MAC, CACII has been in private practice since 1991 and works with adolescent and adult populations on a number of issues, including but not limited to working with clients who engage in self-injurious behaviors, trauma and loss, borderline personality disorder, and mood disorders. She has taught graduate level courses for Columbia College, Coastal Carolina University and Webster University and also teaches a Clinical Supervision course for the SC Clinical Mental Health Counselors Assn. on a regular basis.

Credit: 6 Hours

Audience:  Art Therapists, Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselors, Licensed Professional Counselors, Social Workers, Mental Health Counselors, School Counselors, Marriage and Family Therapists, and Medical Professionals
